Zutphen
Zutphen is a city with many qualifications: monument city, justice city, anthroposophic city, hanseatic city, graphic city. All those qualifications are correct. It just depends on how the visitor views or experiences Zutphen. The Hanseatic city, with a population of 47,000, is beautifully situated on the river IJssel with an impressive front of stately buildings and also a short distance from the free nature of the Veluwe and the beautiful scenery of the Gelderland Achterhoek.
Zutphen is therefore a stimulating city. A city with a rich (Hanseatic) history and hundreds of ancient monuments. A city also with hushed courtyards and cozy terraces. Monumental merchant houses restored to their former glory, picturesque courtyards and imposing churches, part of the old city wall, not to mention the Librije with its world-renowned collection of antiquarian books, testifying to a rich past, about which there is much to tell. Zutphen has two special museums: the Stedelijk Musem and the Museum Henriette Polak. In 2016, these museums will move together with the archaeological department to the national monument Hof van Heeckeren. This city palace is located on the ‘s-Gravenhof in the historic heart of Zutphen.
Bronckhorst
Take a walk through the smallest town in the Netherlands with all its history. Around the year 1000 the name Bronkhorst sounds for the first time in the illustrious history of Gelderland. Bronkhorst has held city rights since 1482. Among the main preserved antiquities are the chapel and a few houses with stepped gables, as well as some houses with woodwork in the outer walls…. It seems as if you enter another world, you will immediately experience a vacation feeling. All this you can go and see for yourself or with a city guide. In the town are many nice stores such as an antique dealer, goldsmith, sculpture garden country shop and a gallery with precious stones. In Rha you can taste Bronckhorster beer and visit the brewery.
Doesburg
Anyone who crosses the IJssel Bridge and drives into town thinks for a moment that time has stood still here. Few cities in our country are as perfectly preserved as this ancient Hanseatic city. The medieval street pattern is still completely intact. In addition, downtown has 150 protected monuments. They bear witness to the rich history of Doesburg, which was granted city rights as early as 1237, some 60 years earlier than Amsterdam! Doesburg is one of the 7 Hanseatic cities on the river IJssel.
Highly recommended is the Lalique Museum in Doesburg with over a thousand glass objects by world-famous French glass and jewelry artist René Lalique.
